This is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but.
The truth is that truth does not exist. Truth is just a concept that, like religion, imagines thought, can somehow be rendered into reality simply by speaking it. ‘Speak the truth,’ they say. ‘Tell the truth,’ but truth is like a philosophers cat, dead and alive at the same time inside your head. You try to tell the truth but when the words roll out, bumping into things on the way, you think – No! Wait! That is not what I meant!
Facts on the other hand are as hard and as bankable as diamonds. People in witness boxes should be asked to tell the facts, all the facts, nothing but.
Yes, I was standing on the corner.
Yes, I saw a young black man wearing a hoody.
Yes, a lifetime of conditioning and prejudice and timidity caused me to believe he wished me harm. But is it true?
Does my bum look big in this? This is not a question for which there is a true answer.
And even if there was a true answer, most people are more interested in looking at your face. So if the only ones you need to worry about are already behind you, like satan and the pantomime wolf, then what do you care? Lets face it neither of them have been bothered much by truth. If you were asking for fact: is my bum too big for this chair? (No you have still got a couple of centimeters each side) then that is something else altogether, but wanting opinion and calling it truth is just asking for trouble.
The only truth that exists in the universe is in mathematics. Numbers are true right out to the furthest reaches and then some. But science, despite all you might think and despite what Richard Dawkins might argue, and despite the whole huge house of cards we have built on top of it, science has no truth.
And in fact, science has no facts. Science is an idea for which we gather evidence. Science is a hypothesis which we test and test and then attempt to prove. But no matter how much we prove and how much the evidence piles up and up, it will never ever turn into fact. Science has no truth only probability. Science is likely. So likely that we can build whole civilizations on it; so likely that we can destroy whole civilization by ignoring it, but it is not and will never be true.
You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth. You can’t touch it, taste it, smell it. You can’t even feel it. Because being true to yourself means letting electrical impulses run down the same old circuits you built in your head when you were three. That is not the truth it is just the easy option.
In the bible Ponitius Pilate asks What is truth? and jesus! not even the son of God can think of an answer. So if I am asked to name three things I know to be true I have to say there is only one. I know that truth does not exist.
