Trader

God is a trader
with carpets to sell
over the blue city
a courtyard shaped
piece of indigo sky
shimmering like knotted silk
is shaken out
for display
and desert coloured
patterns
of rock and sand
with overlapping borders
and ravelling ends
are laid out at our feet
it is
he says
all his own work
of symbolic
and ancient design
and as always
price is a lengthy
negotiation
