Daddy’s Girl

After knowledge comes to you

in an apple

of the fallibility of fathers

There is a small ache

and a holding on

to everything that must stay

the same

And even if, like mine

he knows

(if not everything as I once thought)

more than most

There is a need to explain

the shor tfall

Then one day you discover

It’s not just an imprint of learning

being passed on

But the combination

of your own height

and something to stand on

that makes you tall

And then you know

you will always be Daddy’s girl

Riding high on his shoulder
